The reviews for The Current War are pretty dire which makes the decision to push Mary Magdalene back to Easter even more inexplicable.Frankly it sounds like a mess, an obvious attempt by the director to make an Oscar bait film that falls flat.Weinstein  must be kicking himself.
This one sentence sums it up:
The Current War was a well-executed if formulaic film.
(Yeah, exactly what Academy likes...and the fact that Scott Feinberg likes it, calling it a "legitimate awards player" only confirms this. Usually, what he likes Academy likes also.)
Disappointing to read lukewarm reactions because story about Edison, Westinghouse and Tesla deserves better movie - not only to be Imitation Game: Part 2

Wind River had a better reception than this and good solid reviews, so he can change his race horses yet.. it scary to think that TWC thought that The Current War was better than MM
Indiewire and Collider reviews for The Current War are pretty bad - D grade. (Ehrlich seems a bit angry...I wonder why ;) ).
Forget Wind River, maybe Harvey needs to get Mary Magdalene back in the race ? (I know - zero chance for this but imagine if MM is actually better movie ? Damn TWC ! :fight1: )

and yeah, i was expecting Ehlirich to not ike this after he placed The Current War at last place in his ranking from TIFF (it was #37, now #40, so nothing is worse that this yet :shock2: ), and he called it a disaster

it probably isn't that awful, he made some questionable choices before :D and The Shape of Water and Three Billboards are pretty low on that list too letterboxd.com/davidehrlich/list/tiff-2017/

Every race with Gary Oldman and (very possibly) Daniel Day-Lewis can't be considered lame
You have a point though; this is fourth year in a row where women's competition is much stronger and more interesting to follow.
2013 - McConaughey, Ejjiofor, Dern, DiCaprio, Bale (with Joaquin and Oscar Isaac very close). This was the last time Best Actor race was crowded and really competitive. Since then, it was always the battle between only two (usually one is much more favored to win) and the rest were just " guests at the party". This year will be the same, probably.

Almost certainly. With Lady Bird as runner-up.

The best actress race is going to absolutely fascinating. There`s probably about 10 actresses that could conceivably get nominations/win right now. Some serious talent is going to miss out too.I don`t think J Law or Annette Bening are getting in next year.
