I created this thread because I want to share this conversation between Lynne Ramsay and Esme Creed-Miles (star of show Hanna on Amazon and filmmaker) It’s very inspiring, cool and PR free. It happened in January 2021, Lynne talks about Joaquin a little and that she is writing an original script -Polaris- and there are days she thinks she is not good in her profession.. (she’s human!) But more than anything it’s a conversation about cinema.

Speaking to the British Independent Film Awards, Ramsay talked “You Were Never Really Here,” but also gave some hints as to what the future might hold for the filmmaker. And apparently, while she’s been doing what seems like a year’s worth of press for the film, Ramsay has gone ahead and written a brand-new script for a horror film.

“Well, I wrote 160 pages of a script just after doing all the press for ‘You Were Never Really Here,’ because it’s hard to keep talking about the same films,” Ramsay said. “But I was really inspired by making this film, so I’ve started writing this epic environmental horror thing. [Laughs]”

It's not surprise really. At least 75% of these project never materialise because of schedule.

But what's happening with 'The Island'? I read some rumours that Joaquin will be a part of new PTA project which is expecting to start principal photography in Summer (or earlier). And at the same time Rooney should be doing 'Weapons'.

The Island was supposed to begin on March 31, right?

Ramsay confirmed that production has wrapped on her latest collaboration with Phoenix, previously announced as “Polaris,” though she said the film — in which the Oscar winner plays a photographer — could be released with the title “Dark Slides.” It’s the first time the director will work off an original screenplay since “Ratcatcher” in 1999.

The film is also being described as psychological, where Joaquin Phoenix plays a photographer in Alaska who meets the devil.

We last heard that Lynne Ramsay had, apparently, already shot “Polaris,” with Joaquin Phoenix and Rooney Mara. This news took us all by surprise given that nobody had even heard of the project.

According to a source, the film is set in the 1890s. It’s a period film, about an ice photographer (Phoenix) who meets the devil in Alaska. The film was also shot on location in Alaska, and that’s maybe why it was on nobody’s radar.

The genre being described here is “horror, mystery, thriller”. Obviously, we’re absolutely intrigued by this one. Ramsay is a major talent, but she’s only directed four films during the course of her 24-year career (“Ratcatcher,” “Morvern Callar,” “We Need to Talk About Kevin” and “You Were Never Really Here”).

If it is indeed ready, then we can expect “Polaris” to world premiere at next year’s Cannes Film Festival.
