Venice usually announce their line up by the end of July and I`m really curious to see which films they select.La La Land premiered there last year and quite a few best picture nominees/winners have started their campaigns there too.I don`t think Mary Magdalene is likely to be one of them, I`m guessing that will go to Toronto.

Thanks for the post LaraQ, been waiting not very patiently for the first of the Fall Festival selections. We should hear from Telluride at about the same time as Venice and TIFF a week later based on last years selection releases. I think Venice has an excellent chance for MM, as it was filmed in Italy, so MM would be like the home team and should get a warm response. My odds for getting MM's worlds premiere are: Venice 40% Telluride 35% TIFF 25% I absolutely expect that MM will be shown at TIFF, may just not be the world premiere. But then again what do I know, maybe not much. I think Rooney likes Telluride since it is short and more informal. We will see. Charles

Alexander Payne`s new film, Downsizing, is set to open the Venice Film Festival.Interesting choice. It`s being released in December so Annapurna Pictures obviously think it has awards potential.Great cast too, Matt Damon, Kristen Wiig and Christoph Waltz.Never been a huge fan of Payne`s film but this does sound interesting, kind of like a grown up version of Honey I shrunk The Kids.

What's the difference between Gala category and Special Presentations ? Is Gala more important than the other or this is just routine festival classification ? I can't remember in which category The Secret Scripture, Una and Lion were last year.

Yeah,I think the Gala category is the kind of like the main competition and the special presentations line up is more of a sidebar.
