INTERVIEW WITH ROONEY MARA: "WITHOUT COURAGE YOU CAN NOT ACHIEVE ANYTHING REMARKABLE"
She sits barefoot on the sofa in New York's "Crosby Street Hotel", looks pensive and equanimity. Unlike Sister Kate, Rooney Mara started her stunning Hollywood career after completing her studies (Psychology!). The 33-year-old lives up to what she believes in, campaigns for animals and the environment, eats vegan, refuses plastic, where she can and lives
secluded in Los Angeles. Preferably with partner Joaquin Phoenix. Sounds very sympathetic. And her dimples come to life as she recounts her latest appearance - in the campaign for Givenchy's newly composed fragrance classic L'Interdit.
Did you have a personal connection to Givenchy before the campaign?
Givenchy was one of the first designers I wore when, after "delusion", I suddenly saw the whole world. I felt the same as myself.
Stay true to yourself - this is exactly what Givenchy's new fragrance "L'Interdit" invites ...
That's why I love the campaign! To be true to one's faith and not to constantly compare with others requires courage. One of the greatest virtues available to us! Only with courage can one be authentic. And allow vulnerability.
Is that sometimes difficult for you?
As a young girl, I knew pretty well who I wanted to be and who was not. Not letting me be influenced by what others think of me is my big goal. I do not always succeed, but I do my best. Without courage, nothing remarkable can be achieved.
What makes you feel good?
To realize that we are not alone and have to face all similar feelings, doubts and challenges. That connects!
You studied psychology, do you benefit as an actress?
I do not remember anything! (laughs) But meditation has changed my life and helps me not to be carried away by my moods. Especially when I turn and do not make it to sports, eat unhealthy and sleep too little. For two years, I meditate twice a day for twenty minutes. The constant in my life. This helps a lot to find my inner balance.
That sounds very disciplined?
No, unfortunately I am not! But I worked on it.
Remarkably, you are one of the last celebrities without an Instagram account ...
But, yes, I'm on Instagram, but anonymous and I just follow my huge family, so I stay up to date. But I've never posted anything and I'm only voyeur there. (laughs) An official Instagram account would of course also have advantages, especially as a platform for things that are really close to your heart.
For example, your vegan fashion line "Hiraeth," which you just launched ... what made you become a vegan?
I have not eaten meat since I was first grade and have long thought about giving up on dairy products. Then, about six years ago, a friend sent me an undercover video of a pig slaughterhouse. I fell into a deep, gloomy YouTube hole and watched a lot of videos on the topic. Since then I live vegan. Also for the environment.
What did you learn about your roles in life?
I learn something from every spin, especially about myself. Especially from the bad experiences. There was a movie at the beginning of my career, because I already had a bad feeling at the first audition. But I got the role and learned in this way how important it is to listen to my instincts. After that, my career took a completely different turn because I had the courage to say 'no' to many.
How do you keep your creativity?
I try to admit vulnerability over and over again. This is a huge challenge. Especially in my industry, because you get so often to the point where it is tired to be judged by other people and only retire.
Scent stands for seduction - what do you find particularly seductive?
Self-confidence. And empathy. Finding this combination is not easy. Of course, good smell also helps! (Laughs)
"L'Interdit", translated "The forbidden". Do you like breaking taboos?
Less and less, but I never had any problems with it. My taboo breaks, however, are far too personal to reveal here. (Laughs)
