Subject: What does it take to win a Palme d'Or, and Who has a chance this year My interpretation is that the Palme d’Or will likely go to a widely proven auteur with a strong French/Cannes history, The Palme is not just about who had the best picture that year, as we have recently seen but what have they contributed to Cannes and the French film experience historically. there's something to it, so here are choices of critics from Le Figaro (French paper): Palme D'Or: The Square Palme de Plomb (worst film): Happy End, de Michael Haneke :o :lol2: Actor: Louis Garrel - Le Redoutable Actress: Mariana Spivak - Loveless Jury Prize: 120 battements par minute Ruben Ostlund's 1st Palm d'Or nom is for The Square, which is why I may have overlooked him. However, this is his 4th appearance at Cannes, having won in UCR and Seance. So Yes he should be a contender, still like Hong Sangsoo and Todd's chances better, but I am not there and Le Figaro is. We will see tomorrow. Thanks again for finding that. C

You Were Never Really Here conference is pretty fascinating for so many reasons. Joaquin just do "a Rooney Mara" saying he doesn't have a process and he's there for what the director wants

Bradshaw strongly disliked Todd's 'Wonderstruck' with a 4 rating about the same time he gave a 10 to Loveless. Fortunately for Todd most other critics disagreed with him. That being said he gave Carol a 10 two years ago. I do like his Okja pick, but like Sofia Coppola for Director, Haneke may have a better French product but he has 2 Palmes already what does this do to push young talent forward as Cannes likes to do. Just my uninformed ramblings, Bradshaw is very well respected. Charles

Yeah, he is one of my favorite movie critics but his opinions tend to be often political sometimes and (not only a few times) baffling.
