Without TIFF or Venice, Telluride's looking tough now. I wonder if the plan is to just release the film without any festival rounds. Wouldn't be the best idea, as support is needed. I`d be amazed if it didn`t go to Telluride. It would be madness not to take it to a festival as they are such a huge boost to a films profile. But I must admit, the doubts are starting to creep in.

Doesn't feel like a Telluride kinda film, but i am happy to be wrong. It can still potentially be added to TIFF slate. If it's not at festivals i expect a date change. To early 2018. To release it with no festival run on Weinstein favorite date - Thanksgiving, is really not his style. It's looking bleek right now.

I was convinced for a long time that MM will have premiere at Venice. Well, let's hope for Telluride and (possibly) TIFF but I'm not optimist anymore. It all looked bright with that November Thanksgiving date; wonder what went wrong.
Maybe we're overreacting this and MM will join TIFF line-up in the end.

it's possible, perhaps Harvey wants to make a bigger splash with the announcement, it will stand out more in the second wave of titles for TIFF, when the rest of major hits is known already :D , seriously though, it's hard to imagine why there's The Current War but no MM, he doesn't really have anything else this years, does he? unless he's unable to make his 2 main stars to cooperate and do their job promoting the movie during this festival circuit :P

I am not going to jump to conclusions, at least not yet. The movie is just as good as it was when Harvey gave it the November date, nothing has changed there. So it is just a case of what is the proper amount of promotion, and when does it begin.
Garth and Harvey are sure to still be optimistic, at least from my perspective.

Charles Agree, The quality of the film is outside the business, especially in a biblical film. I wanted TIFF because it has very good coverage and Telluride is a classic for Rooney (I wanted a recognition for Joaquin too) but both will be filming new movies at that date probably. Maybe a religious film would disappear in the Festival Fever pre Oscars and they expect to have good traditional reviews and premiere at Easter in the rest of the world

It doesn’t surprised me MM is not at Venice Festival, I think that would have been kind of provocative in one of the the most Catholic countries, kind of dropping a bomb and have a backslash so early, we know that this is not a make fun of religion movie but maybe they are just been cautious. I think it would be at TIFF.

Telluride is still in the hunt, we just won't know for a day or two before the opening on Sept 1. Telluride could well be the reason it is not at Venice, since they run pretty much concurrently. I read somewhere that VFF wanted two or three other films that couldn't make it due to other festival conflicts, maybe MM was one of them.

This is odd. Whatever happens, I hope Harvey stays away from the urge to change things up and sticks with the Thanksgiving date.

On every prediction list for Awards this season The Current War almost always had advantage over Mary Magdalene, despite MM having much better release date. Maybe they knew something we don't ? Or perhaps they think The Current War has more awards-friendly story ? Whatever it is, if Telluride also isn't the option in a month, then we can almost surely expect TWC to switch dates between the two movies, just like Admin said today. Well, if there are bad news - let it be so, better to be prepared for them. But this will be, of course, huge disappointment.
Btw, is there any test screening of MM in August ? Does anyone know ?

No idea. As for the rest, my main concern has always been the editing process. Because there's no way Harvey doesn't get final say. Lion and MM are polar opposites. So his collaboration with Garth on this will not be the same either. Lion was a crowd pleaser from the get go, so it worked in Garth's favor. Outside of that he's still new without a lot of clout handling a controversial subject for Twc. The whole thing is much different story this time.

Given the financial difficulty TWC are in it`s unlikely they are going to mount two big Oscar campaigns and my gut tells me that Harvey is high on The Current War.It does seem like a very baity, prestige type film and I suspect he`s hoping to replicate the success of The Imitation Game with it.

Some critics saw the trailer in an Universal event. Maybe that means something. Maybe Harvey isn't really on board of this
