Davis and international distributor Universal Pictures shopped the film around, finding a new home at Sony Pictures which will now handle domestic distribution. Which is good, since this movie sounds incredibly interesting.

Set in the Holy Land in the first century C.E., a young woman leaves her small fishing village and traditional family behind to join a radical new social movement. At its head is a charismatic leader, Jesus of Nazareth, who promises that the world is changing. Mary is searching for a new way of living, and an authenticity that is denied her by the rigid hierarchies of the day. As the notoriety of the group spread and more are drawn to follow Jesus’ inspirational message, Mary’s spiritual journey places her at the heart of a story that will lead to the capital city of Jerusalem, where she must confront the reality of Jesus’ destiny and her own place within it.

It is scheduled to be released in the United Kingdom on March 16, 2018, by Universal Pictures, and in the United States on March 30, 2018, by Columbia Pictures.

due to the sexual abuse allegations against TWC founder Harvey Weinstein, Universal and Garth Davis began looking for another American distributor for Mary Magdalene , On November 2017, it was announced that Sony Pictures tookover the US distributor instead acquiring the film's North American distribution rights for $32 million and Affirm Films co-producing the project making this is Affirm Films's first major film after a string independent films that they made
