Soooo, the Oscars are getting a new category.Outstanding Achievement In Popular Film. This feels like the dumbest decision they've made in a long time.They clearly see it as a way to reward films like Black Panther without allowing them to be nominated in the Best Picture category, because God forbid a genre film should be nominated.Stupid. :fight3:  :( |

Soooo, the Oscars are getting a new category.Outstanding Achievement In Popular Film. This feels like the dumbest decision they've made in a long time.They clearly see it as a way to reward films like Black Panther without allowing them to be nominated in the Best Picture category, because God forbid a genre film should be nominated.Stupid.   They should just nominate genre movies in the BP category, like what they did with Mad Max 4.
Also an award for Best 'Popular' Film would just be such a backhanded award, it's like "yeah you're film was great, but because it's 'popular' it's not enough to get nominated in the Best Picture category".

Also, they are going to keep some of the prizes off the air and present it during the commercials in order to keep the show at 3 hours or less. They haven't specified which categories yet.
Apparently with these changes they are looking for a more "Globally Accessible" telecast.
I know their ratings have been declining considerably, but this move doesn't go along with their idea of Oscars being exclusive, if anything they sound more like MTV Movie Awards or People's Choice Awards now.

Terrible. It's obvious - more or less - which categories will get "behind the curtain" treatment.

Nah apparently ABC (owned by Disney btw) suggested adding that category to the Academy, among other things.

They should try with "Hollywood Pervert of the Year" category. Competition would be strong in this one and TV ratings not a big problem anymore.

This award will be first done in 2020, so it will only start with 2019 movies, so Black Panther won't get nominated (and it won't be nominated for Best Picture either).
