If,as many people predict,Black Panther is nominated in the Best Picture Category and it also gets nominated in the new Outstanding Achievement In Popular Film category, won't that hurt its chances in both?.Most people aren't going to vote for it twice. It's like actors who get a best actor/supporting actor nom in the same year and end up losing out on both because the vote was split.
This award will be first done in 2020, so it will only start with 2019 movies, so Black Panther won't get nominated (and it won't be nominated for Best Picture either).
Oh right. For some reason I thought they were introducing it in 2019.I don't think it will win, but I do think Black Panther will get a BP nomination.

No comic book movie, not The Dark Knight, not Logan, none of them got a Best Picture Nomination. Even if BP made a huge impact culturally, so did Wonder Woman and that didn't receive a Best Picture nomination despite plenty of people predicting that it would. So I highly doubt that Black Panther will end up being nominated, and if it is, it probably won't be for Best Picture. Maybe if there weren't any Best Picture frontrunners coming out in the remainder of 2018 it might've had a chance.

Few exceptions aside, I'm really not that impressed with this year's offerings overall. Not much original stuff here. Looking forward the most to The Old Man and the Gun, Suspiria, Widows, Roma and The Favourite (only because Lanthimos is directing). First Man certainly seems the most spectacular entry but, judging on the trailer, it looks like rehash of The Right Stuff (1983). The 15 Most Anticipated Movies of Fall 2018The Sisters Brothers and Vox Lux should be on the list too. Hope some original "small" movie will come out of nowhere at the festivals and win the awards season.

I'm not really feeling many of those films. This years offerings feel so flat compared to last year.I'm excited about Suspiria and The Favourite but that's about it.I've heard Mary Queen Of Scots is bad.Surprised If Beale Street Could Talk was omitted.

Just saw Roma on Netflix. Not the best way to view it over three nights.
But a very, very, powerful movie. I can see why G. Del Toro thinks it is one of the five best movies in his lifetime.
It was in one theater in Houston, 40 minutes away in downtown, so my schedule didn’t allow the full theatrical experience.
Really hope the actress (former non actress) with the Cleo role wins or is nominated by someone.
A truly great performance!
Any other category is also deserving.
Charles
ps Not seen anything else but did watch Godfather 1, I would put it in the same group of excellence!

C I watched it the same way, just because i really wanted to watch it during my little free time. Excellent performance by Yalitza Aparicio, very touching and surprisingly so good for a non actress.

I have not seen all the movies but I feel that the nominations are the weakest in recent years. Everything is very mainstream ... without risks. I really like the foreign l nominees

Kinda surprised that Chalamet wasn't nominated but other than that, there were no real shocks this year.

Idk, I was surprised that If Beale Street Could Talk wasn't nominated for Best Picture (I haven't seen it yet but there's been lots of bp nominations) and the acting nominations for Roma were a pleasant surprise.

Green Book is SO BAD. I don’t know where to start. Even the performances are formulaic. So BASIC. So LIMITED.... I can’t
