Amanda Lindhout is a more energetic role by the way
Rooney would be fine leading actress in movies directed by James Gray, don't you think ?
I just read a Joaquin interview in The Australian. He said he was talking with Gray about a new collaboration ... Maybe Rooney can join. Gray is not going to make a feminine role that is just the girlfriend

I'm all for it. I'd bet that The Immigrant might be one of Rooney's favorite films (because of Marion).

Yes. What an amazing performance.

Still I’d love Rooney in this but some critics I really respect hated it and says Portman performance is over the top. It’s 59% in RT

It’s 59% in RT I've heard some really divided reactions to it, some loving it, others hating it. I wanna check it out whatever the case though (I might need to wait till March to see it though).

That's not true.I remember Raffey Cassidy was cast after Portman. Also I've seen the film and they make Raffey look more like Portman by including her facial moles.

Well, I've seen Vox Lux in the theater. I really liked the first part , the part of Raffy Cassidy, the Celeste teenager but I lost interest when she appears adult. The performance of Portman is over-acted and with an accent that she does not have when young. Jackie and Black Swan are among my favorites but she is bad here, distracts and disarms what was done previously. I would have loved to see Rooney's version of this, a "minimalist" version of Celeste. There has to be a way to be an addict and not be over the top ... The second part is not as well written, directed and accomplished as the first one either ... I will always be sad because Rooney did not do it, not because it is a great movie but because the film deserved a more nuanced performance. Do not completely buy the message of the film, honestly. But it's a worthwhile experience, especially in the theater
I went with someone who is not a fan of Rooney and thought the same about Natalie

I haven't seen it yet but I've heard Natalie gives a BIG,borderline ridiculous performance.Rooney is a very subtle actress and it would've been interesting to see her take on this role.

I've seen the film and read a few interviews and Celeste in the second half of the film is meant to be purposefully exaggerated as the film is a twisted fairytale/dark comedy. The two Celeste's are meant to be close to two separate characters. I think it's easy to see Portmans's performance as a over the top but she has great scenes showing nuance and a complicated character. If Mara was in the movie she too would be asked for a larger performance by the director because it is how Celeste is envisioned by the director.

If what you say is true, the movie is much more bad than I thought at first. If the viewer has to read interviews or behind scenes of a movie to understand its purpose, to participate in its message, or to feel its aesthetics, it means something really works badly in it. In that case I'm happy that Rooney didn’t participate in a movie with an empty pretension, a horrible direction and a false depth

For me it was quiet clear from watching the film that it was a black comedy and that not everything should be taken at face value. But it's up to the viewer to interpret a film as they want. I personally think there is space for different types of performances and films. Vox Lux is very ambitious and although the movie is not perfect I found what the film had to say about popstars and the celebrity cycle to be very interesting.
