Just finished watching it. Not really a review, but just some general thoughts of the film. Overall I liked it, but I get why it's getting some mixed reactions. I'll start off with the things I did enjoy. Rooney and most of the cast are great. I think Jesse Plemons was the dark horse as Jason Segel's brother. He added some nice levity to what on the surface could feel like a really depressing film. As for Rooney, I was surprised by her character since it was not at all what I was expecting from the trailer. A lot more sardonic, chatty and fun, while at the same time really melancholic character. Haven't really seen her play somebody like this and it was refreshing to watch. Riley Keough wasn't as much in it as I'd expected and her character's plot line and the effect it has on the main story feels the most contrived. I think the weakest link here is Jason Segel. I don't think he was terrible but I don't think he was great either. A lot of his performance just boils down to him crossing his arms, rubbing his temple and to furrow his eyebrows. I wouldn't say he was devoid of all chemistry with Rooney, but she was definitely the side that was the most interesting.
Cinematography was solid and definitely see the influence from the Master, especially from the opening shot. Some nice visuals occasionally but nothing too mind blowing. Film has a nice cerebral and melancholic soundtrack. My main issue with the film was that it could've benefited either from an extra 30 minutes or actually being a television show/mini series, since the ideas and situations it's presented can't really be properly explored within the span of a 90 minute feature length film. The last third of the film especially dumps this whole new plot twist and reveal that you could make an entire second film off, but then the film just kind of ends before it could properly develop and deliver this new direction it went. Lots of bad exposition dumps as well. A lot of the elements, such as how the Discovery was made, the nature of the cult and the more grander sociological impacts of the Discovery are kind of skimmed over to focus on Rooney and Jason's relationship, which is not a bad thing, but kind of emphasizes that it would've benefited from being in a longer story format. By the time you're done with the film, you feel like you only have a surface level glimpse into this world and the ending doesn't really make the landing and impact that it wanted to. Also, while I think the Sorkian-esque dialogue helped add a bit of humour to what could've been an overly-dreary experience, it didn't always work and sometimes even felt a little forced.
Overall a solid film-initially I was going to give it a 7, but after the ending it got bumped down to a 6.

i immediately thought about Tood, when Charlie talked about his visual book that he made before shooting, i remember Rooney describing Todd's book with visual references during Carol promotion :)

Just finished watching the film. It's flawed, but I adored it in spite of it. We haven't seen Rooney like this before. She was wonderful, funny and witty, loved her performance . More thoughts on it here.

Do you guys think now seeing it, it should've been in the theater or better off on Netflix? Wasn't it going to get a limited release?

It's so nice to have seen the film at the same time though. It almost feels like we saw it together

Yea, I could definitely see he was inspired by the The Master.
