It's really refreshing to see him get all this love for a change. Hopefully this is the turning point for him, and we get more of this.

So it makes sense that these seemingly kindred spirits, a pair of creative outsiders, united for a project like You Were Never Really Here, a dramatic thriller about another character bucking a system to do something meaningful. The film, which spurred a bidding war at last year’s festival, is based on the eponymous 2013 Jonathan Ames novella. But it wasn’t the source material or the central character, an emotionally unstable war veteran, that drew Phoenix to the project. It was Ramsay.

In fact, Phoenix told Vanity Fair by phone that he was so determined to work with the We Need to Talk About Kevin filmmaker that he arrived for the first day of filming last summer without having met Ramsay beforehand—something that the actor had never done before in his thrice-Oscar-nominated career.

I have a great admiration for people like that, who just give everything they have and are completely devoted to what it is we’re working on,” Phoenix continued. “It’s not a job for Lynne. It’s not a profession. It’s something more. There’s something that she’s yearning to get at and to grapple with. It’s exciting and inspiring standing next to somebody that feels that strongly about things.”

2017 Cannes Competition Rankings

98 Combined Critics (excludes Letterboxd accounts) on a 0-10 scale

The top 6 seem to be this years cream of the crop though others; Loveless, Okja, Happy End, and the Secret Deer (among others) have strong followings.

And Ramsey and Joaquin's film on Saturday has quite a bit of promise. Maybe it will end up on top.

The comparable 2016 rankings are listed down below

Strange that in 2016 only 2 films in the top ten got awards Graduation at #6 (tie) Best Director, and the Salesman #10 for Screenplay and Actor.

Among the other notables the 19th film (out of 21) won the Gran Prix, Dolan's It's Only the End of the World.

and #8 JULIETA (Pedro Almodovar) was left out of the awards.

IN any event Cannes is a great celebration of film, and is not to be missed.

Which Cannes Movies Could Become Oscar Contenders?
especially about Wonderstruck, but also this:

...in a reel screened by Focus Features here on the Croisette, where they teased several of their upcoming films that have Oscar potential, like the Judi Dench royalty dramedy Victoria and Abdul, Gary Oldman as Winston Churchill in The Darkest Hour, and the most intriguing entry, Mary Magdalene, a rough-hewn biblical drama starring Rooney Mara as the title character. That one is directed by Garth Davis, whose film debut Lion was a major contender this past year, and it co-stars Phoenix as Jesus, whom the 42-year-old actor plays as sort of a bemused California hippie. Expect it to premiere at the fall film festivals, where we’ll pick this Oscar thread back up.
