Awards Watch ? I don't understand why you are nervous ? Because few people there think that MM description sounds too much Oscar baity ? Give me a break !

oscar-baity isn't a problem, i can also relate to hate for Harvey ;) , but i ment overall negative reaction, flop/whitewashing, making fun of Jesus (i can see why, Joaquin's line seems a bit pretentious, maybe it's just that discription though), so far i saw Jesus described as hippie and emo, Gregory Ellwood wasn't impressed by him either i know it's too soon, we didn't see anything yet, still i'm bummed out right now, just a little bit :-/

I understand, some people are just suspicious at the moment but they act like reactions were terrible O_o I mean, what they expected ? Some universal, out-of-this-world rapturous raves for the footage ? We don't have even trailer yet.
As for Gregory Ellwood, I don't see some big problem in this. I remember Carol getting lukewarm reactions after first screening and then, month later...
That said, I don't expect Mary Magdalene to be exactly good like Carol but if the movie is slightly better than Lion that will be enough for awards attention. And "whitewashing" will be a possible obstacle, of course; if "Oscar so white" happens again we can expect backlash against this movie (the problem with Carol was - it's about "two white privileged women" :cringe: God forbid !)
The most important thing is critics reaction on MM; I think we can be positive and optimistic about this, when the time comes.

We really should not worry that much about what Ellwood thinks, other reactions were pretty good. As for AW, that's just how they are. Their refusal to recognize Lion as a player until deep into awards season last year is still pretty funny.

AW hates everything about it though, they made me a little bit nervous now :nervous: They make me a bit nervous too. But remember this, apart from a few sweet people, AW is filled with a bunch of stubborn know-it-alls. They're good people too but exeptionally stubborn. And that trait usually comes back to bite them in the ass

I don't see MM as Oscar bait at all. In paper it's a movie with a lot of risks including Joaquin and Rooney as Jesus and Mary if they get there will be cause the acting is really great and Harvey is really good in his work. It's a religious film with a spiritual update so it's not there for everyone. And poor Garth I remember when he was offended because his little Australian movie -Lion- was called Oscar bait and I think he's right, the acting in Lion is really subtle and the direction isn't manipulating viewers in my opinion. I think House in the Sky is his Oscar-bait

But now with Garth helming it I'm a little uneasy about it. Even if it's not his intention, he'll most likely make it one.

I know he loves working with Rooney but I`m genuinely surprised that Garth is taking on another project so quickly after his last two.3 films in roughly 3 years is a LOT.You`d think he`d want to take a bit of a break.

I was like Megan Ellison will make something really special with this and now with Garth on board I'm like crossing fingers even when I love the guy. I loved House in the Sky book by the way. Thanks for telling me I could read it before the movie. I will comment more on the House thread

I honestly still don't get the "whitewashing" controversy for this film, if someone could explain again. It'd be much appreciated. She's supposed to be middle eastern, which Rooney isn't, hence the controversy. Everyone's treating it like it's another Pan situation (which I don't quite agree with, but to each their own). I'm not too aware of Mary in general, all I know is whatever little I had read about her (before Rooney got cast) I was intrigued by, and when I heard they were making the film I wished Rooney would somehow play her. Didn't anticipate the Whitewashing claims that would follow once she did get cast. All I thought was how incredible it was that she was going to play this excellent role.
