There’s a pretty impressive film called MONOS. It’s on Hulu US, Netflix UK, LAT and others. Hope you watch. It’s really great and has Mica Levi’s music

Another offload of recent viewings: - Bridesmaids: Liked it quite a bit, the cast are the shining point. - Gertie the Dinosaur: Early short film, live action first half was bleh but the second half with the animation was fun and revolutionary for its time. - King Kong (1933): A bit dated for sure but still pretty good. - Kiki's Delivery Service: Loved every moment of it. Really liked watching it. - Rashomon: Another great Kurosawa movie and not quite what I expected. - Princess Mononoke: Possibly my favourite Studio Ghibli movie so far. - I'm a Cyborg, But That's OK: Very quirky movie from Park Chan-wook and actually really good. - King Kong vs. Godzilla: Really silly and dumb but a lot of fun - Fallen Angels: Loved it even just for the visual style and direction - Clueless: Can't believe it took me this long to see it but I really like this. - Bottle Rocket: Not one of his best movies but still a great debut from Wes Anderson - Rushmore: So far my second favourite from Wes Anderson, really liked it. - Wild Strawberries: Loved it, definitely need to see more Bergman

Recent viewings - The Wild Bunch: One of the best westerns I've seen. - Pusher: Early NWR is rough but quite good. - Strangers on a Train: Really great thriller. - My Neighbor Totoro: My least favourite Ghibli so far but really good. - One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest: I can see why it's a classic, can't believe it took me this long to get around to it. - Chungking Express: Loved it. - The Royal Tenenbaums: One of Wes Anderson's best for sure. - The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou: A bit messy and not one of Wes's best but still creative and well directed. - Safe House: Okay but average action flick, Denzel Washington and Ryan Reynolds are good. - Phone Booth: Tight and incredibly effective thriller, well made and Colin Farrell and Kiefer Sutherland are great - Blue Valentine: Hard to watch but incredible movie. Gosling and Williams give career best performances. - Mulan 2020: I still need to write a review on this but I'm a bit mixed on it. I liked it when I saw it but it gets worse the more I think about it. - High and Low: Great crime thriller and one of Kurosawa's best (that I've seen). - The Darjeeling Limited: Not one of Wes Anderson's best either, it was mostly alright, still well directed and the main trio of Owen Wilson, Jason Schwartzman and Adrien Brody are good. - Hard Eight: Although the middle portion isn't as strong as the rest of the movie, a really solid debut from PTA, acting was great too. - Rebecca: Saw this in prep for the Netflix version coming next month, one of Hitchcock's best.

Watched a whole lot of horror movies for October, these are first time viewings, these are ranked from best to worst: - I Saw the Devil: My favourite of this month, brutal and grim and incredibly well made, I loved it., - Martyrs (2008): Incredibly hard to watch yet excellently made, directed and written - Thirst: One of the best and most unique takes on a vampire movie - Diabolique: Atmospheric and greatly made, worth going into blind - M: Excellent film - The Brood: Great Cronenberg body horror. - Prince of Darkness: One of John Carpenter's best. - Nosferatu (1922): A classic horror silent film - The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari: Another classic horror silent film - Eyes Without a Face: Quite slow but beautifully made and effective horror movie. - Deep Red: Another great Argento horror film. - Scanners: Entertaining and campy horror movie that was quite surprising. - Audition: Slow burn horror movie which takes quite a turn in the second half, really good. - Repulsion: Didn't like this as much as I would've liked but still good, it's well directed and great lead performance. - Lake Mungo: Underrated mockumentary movie that's really effective. - Ringu: I prefer the remake overall but still quite good. - Funny Games (1997): Well directed and acted, a bit hard to watch. - Noroi: The Curse: Underrated found footage mockumentary movie which has its issues but is worth watching. - 1408: Really entertaining horror movie that's directed well and John Cusack is good in the lead role.
I also watched the Assembly Cut of Alien 3, I can't remember if this was the version I watched when I first saw Alien 3, but I actually think it's really good. Has its issues for sure due to production but I think it's almost at the same level as Aliens.

I rewatched a number of movies last month but there were some first time viewings as well: - Ikiru was fantastic, I know that's to be expected from Kurosawa but still. It was definitely emotional but I was caught off guard by how optimistic it was. - Castle in the Sky: Another fun Studio Ghibli adventure - I don't love In the Mood for Love as much as Fallen Angels or Chungking Express but it's still really great. I definitely need to check out more of the director's other work. - Persona was certainly quite an experience, I definitely need to watch more from Bergman. - Finally got around to The Florida Project and it was indeed great, with some really good performances. - Howl's Moving Castle was quite good, I actually watched the dubbed version instead of the subbed version and it was quite good. - Lost Highway is now currently in my top 3 favourite David Lynch movies. It really worked for me. - My review of Possessor will be coming tomorrow but it's an intense, disturbing and really well made sci-fi body horror. - Halloween 2 (1981) is not particularly great, it's a decent by the numbers slasher flick that's forgettable. - A Bigger Splash was great and had me quite on board most of the time and the performances were excellent (particularly Ralph Fiennes). Though it was a bit overlong and the first two thirds were definitely stronger than the last third.

First time viewings: - Home Alone: I thought I'd be in the minority of people who would find it mediocre or something but I actually quite enjoyed it. - Mothra vs. Godzilla: Very silly and bizarre at points but enjoyable. - Pusher 2: With Blood on My Hands: Even better than the first Pusher movie, Nicolas Winding Refn had improved significantly as a filmmaker since the last film, the story was more interesting, and Mads Mikkelsen was great. - Halloween 3: Season of the Witch: One of the best movies in the series and I admire the effort to try something different. - Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers: It's okay, silly in some areas but succeeds in others. - Halloween 5: The Revenge of Michael Myers: Currently the worst of the series, ultimately ends up being a trailer for the 6th movie. Bad. - Halloween 6: The Curse of Michael Myers: Watched the Producer's Cut, better than 5 but a mixed bag and is bizarre and nonsensical. - Underwater: Simple but effective horror thriller in the ocean. - eXistenZ: Currently the worst I've seen from Cronenberg but still pretty good. - The Blob (1958): B-movie as to be expected but quite a lot of fun. - True Romance: Tarantino's writing paired perfectly with Scott's direction. Great. - Beast: Pretty good slow burn thriller, with a great performance from Jessie Buckley. - Glory: Good - The King: I like it, beautifully shot and directed, and performances were really good. - The Miniaturist: Decent although could've been better. Anya Taylor-Joy great as always. - Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer: Gritty and grisly movie that worked incredibly well, Michael Rooker is good in the lead role. - War & Peace (2016): Not familiar with the book but was very well made and I was invested, performances are great too.

Some of my first time watches from the past month - First Cow: Slow burn and I wasn't fully invested but it was really good, well acted and excellently directed. - She Dies Tomorrow: Well shot and visually stunning but beyond that is just fine. After the first 30 minutes I lost most of my investment. - Bacurau: Really crazy genre bending film that's well made and definitely worth watching. - Halloween H20: 20 Years Later: Unfortunately is quite flawed and occupies the middle tier of the series, but I liked it, Jamie Lee Curtis is great and I really liked the climax. - Halloween: Resurrection: By far worst of the series, it's almost like they gave up at this point. However there are some aspects that are entertaining (intentional or not). - The Vast of Night: Really good sci-fi indie movie that is definitely worth the watch. - A.I. Artifical Intelligence: Surprisingly dark, one of Spielberg's best. - Minari: One of 2020's best, great on all fronts. - Crimson Tide: One of my favourite movies from Tony Scott, Washington and Hackman are great, it's tense and well directed. - Once: Really heartfelt musical movie that deserves a lot more attention, it comes from the director of Sing Street (another movie I liked). - Black Rain: One of Ridley Scott's most underrated movies, a stylish action flick from the 80s that is worth watching. - The Rundown: A dumb and typical yet funny and entertaining action flick starring Dwayne Johnson.

Aw. I adore ONCE and MINARI. Also I think THE NEST deserved more attention. It’s really interesting...

More recent first time viewings - Jigsaw: A pretty standard Saw movie just made more recently. It's decent enough for a Saw movie but I'm not quite sure what the purpose of the movie is. - Happy Together: Another great movie from Wong Kar-wai, albeit hard to watch and sad. - Red State: I've not seen a whole lot from Kevin Smith but a surprising movie from him. It's a messy but enjoyable horror thriller. - Mangrove: A great movie, well directed, acted and written. - The Raid 2: A crime action epic with some fantastic stunts and action sequences. - Zack Snyder's Justice League: As a fan of MoS and BvS this was incredibly satisfying to watch, on top of being way better than the 2017 Justice League movie in every way. - Lovers Rock: Bit of a plotless/vibe movie that didn't quite work for me, but it was very well directed by Steve McQueen. - Paprika: Another great movie from the director of Perfect Blue, very creative. - Godzilla vs. Kong: Very flawed but such an experience on the big screen. - Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance: Great and compelling revenge thriller from Park Chan-wook. - The Villainess: Very good and engaging action thriller, quite underrated. - The Father: Unbelievably incredible on every level from the writing, direction and performances. Watch it ASAP. - The Wailing: One of the best horror movies of the 2010s, amazing film. - Crash (1996): One of Cronenberg's strangest and most polarising movies, but probably one of his best. - Fiddler on the Roof: Never seen this before but I liked it a lot more than I thought I would. - Dirty Dancing: Very cheesy but also very fun, with a great soundtrack.

A lot of first time viewings - Gia: Unconventional and experimental biopic. Angelina Jolie is fantastic in the lead role, the best performance I've seen from her. - The Blackcoat's Daughter: Unfortunately once I figured out where everything was going my interested dropped a bit, but I liked it, the performances were great and it was directed and shot very well. - Grave of the Fireflies: One of the best movies I've seen from Studio Ghibli, but not really one I want to watch again. - Collective: Incredible documentary from Romania that's definitely worth watching. - Bound: Very stylish and entertaining neo noir. In my opinion the best film from the Wachowskis. - Lady Snowblood: Visually stunning and influential for sure. - 21 Bridges: There are solid performances and the action is quite good, however it is very generic and has a familiar and average story. - 16 Blocks: Entertaining buddy action movie. - Close Encounters of the Third Kind: Unfortunately so far my least favourite Steven Spielberg movie, it's just okay and I like the visuals and that's it. - Kingdom of Heaven: The director's cut is fantastic and one of my favourite Ridley Scott movies. - Mortal Kombat (2021): As a Mortal Kombat fan I was entertained, and the action was fun, though it could've been better. - The Hitman's Bodyguard: Incredibly familiar plot, but the action and the chemistry between Ryan Reynolds and Samuel L. Jackson makes it worth it. - The Devil Wears Prada: The plot isn't anything special and is very 2000s, but was also a lot of fun, and the actors are great in their parts. - Tucker and Dale vs. Evil: Entertaining and surprisingly fun horror comedy. - Small Axe: Red, White and Blue: It could've been a bit longer but very compelling movie and story. John Boyega is also fantastic here, his best performance yet.
