MAINSTREAM has some ideas that work and some clearly don't, but it’s not the heck that some believe. (I'm not Palo Alto nostalgic)
“ The woman in the window” though ... Oh boy, if this is the improved cut, how would the first one be. Amy :(

It's been a while but here's some of my recent first time watches in May: - Singin' in the Rain: First time checking out this classic, so glad I did, it was very enjoyable. - Free Solo: Very thrilling and interesting. - Surrogates: Very intriguing concept in an okay but entertaining sci-fi action movie. - Spiral: From the Book of Saw: One of the best in the series despite some flaws. - Wrath of Man: One of Guy Ritchie's best, the movie wasn't what I expected at all. - Without Remorse: Very forgettable action espionage thriller but the action is well done, and the cast are good, especially Michael B. Jordan as the lead. - Millennium Actress: Another great film from Satoshi Kon, the director of Perfect Blue and Paprika. - Sympathy for Lady Vengeance: One of my favourite films from Park Chan-wook, so excellently made. - Out of the Past: Classic noir that's quite good. - A Quiet Place Part II: About the same level as the first movie, I liked it and I'm on board for a Part III. - Army of the Dead: One of my favourite zombie movies, can't wait for the other movies in this soon to be franchise. - Legally Blonde movies: Legally Blonde 1 was actually quite good and I surprisingly enjoyed it. Legally Blonde 2 was very much not good at all.
June first time watches: - Those Who Wish Me Dead: A bit disappointing that this is Taylor Sheridan's follow up to his last movie Wind River (which I liked quite a lot) but it's still entertaining in a 90s thriller way, and the cast are good. - Scooby-Doo (2002): The first Scooby-Doo movie or show I've ever watched and I'm surprised at how much I enjoyed it. - Cure: Currently my fave first time watch of this month. An incredibly haunting and effective horror thriller that's well worth watching. - Den of Thieves: A rough but well made and entertaining heist movie that's solid. - The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do it: Definitely the worst of the trilogy and definitely lacks what James Wan brought to it, but I was interested throughout and Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga once again shine as their lead characters. - Mean Girls: Can't believe it took me this long to watch it, I can see why it's known as a classic. - The Night Comes for Us: An incredibly brutal action crime thriller, with spectacular sequences. A wild ride for sure. - Cruella: I liked it a lot more than I expected. Unnecessary but still entertaining, directed stylistically, and the cast are great, especially Emma Stone and Emma Thompson. - Easy A: Very fun to watch and quotable but it would not have worked nearly as well without Emma Stone's performance. - Freaky Friday: Fun 2000s comedy, and Lindsay Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis are really good. - Stoker: Another great Park Chan-wook thriller, despite it being in the English language, you can tell it's from him. The cast are great too. Surprised to learn that Wentworth Miller wrote this.

Some more first time watches: - The Hunt (2020): Some decent thrilling scenes and Betty Gilpin is really good in the lead role however it's just okay at best on the whole. - Nobody: Fun action movie, Bob Odenkirk shines as the lead. - Joint Security Area: Such an effective early movie from Park Chan-wook. - Wide Awake: A surprising early movie from M. Night Shyamalan. It's not really good, but harmless enough. - The Collector: Underrated horror movie. - Black Widow: Some of it is actually really good, a lot of it unfortunately falls back onto the MCU formula. I enjoyed it though. - Sunshine: One of my favourite Danny Boyle movies, I really liked it. - Clue: Potentially one of my favourite comedies of all time now. I enjoyed it from start to finish. - The Dig: Slow burn history movie which is okay, but the cinematography and the cast made it enjoyable enough. - Beverly Hills Cop: Good buddy cop comedy, and Eddie Murphy shines in it. - Old: Among M. Night Shyamalan's top 5 movies. - Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins: The plot is really nothing special but some decisions, the cast, and some action scenes made it enjoyable. - The Tomorrow War: A typical sci-fi alien invasion movie which could've been more than it was, but was entertaining enough with the action scenes. - Rear Window: Fantastic and well crafted thriller. One of Hitchcock's best. - Stay: Visually stunning and twisty psychological thriller. - Jungle Cruise: Doesn't do more than call back to much better adventure movies, but entertains for what it is. - The Hitman's Wife's Bodyguard: At about the same level of the first movie, though way goofier and sillier. - Pusher III: A solid conclusion to Nicolas Winding Refn's unplanned trilogy, and a compelling crime drama. - City of God: An outstanding and excellently made movie, can't believe it's taken me this long to get around to it.

I watched a lot the past month: - Censor: Really good and well directed psychological horror, definitely worth checking out. - Sin Nombre: Great film, I need to watch more from Cary Fukunaga. - Meet the Feebles: My least favourite Peter Jackson movie. Definitely aims to provoke and gross out but after the first 10 minutes, you get used to it and the jokes get old, becoming tedious to sit through. - Re-Animator: Very good horror movie with great effects. - The Suicide Squad: Definitely has a ton of issues but some of the characters, the performances and the action made it enjoyable and decent. - Beverly Hills Cop II: Though a bit weaker with its script compared to the first movie, still funny and entertaining, and definitely benefits from Tony Scott's direction. - Enter the Dragon: My first Bruce Lee movie, it's quite good and I need to watch more of them. - Free Guy: A lot more fun than I expected it to be. - The Courier: Solid if conventional spy thriller, with some great performances. - Honest Thief: Passable Liam Neeson thriller. - Our Kind of Traitor: Good spy movie, really elevated by the performances. - The A-Team: Very entertaining and self aware, the main cast and the action are fun to watch. - Rush Hour: Fun buddy cop movie, with the chemistry of the two leads really making the film. - Safe (2012): Decent Jason Statham movie. - Monster Hunter: Not that good, but it's a B-level video game movie I had fun with. - The Ice Road: Liam Neeson flick that had potential but brought down by its plot becoming more convoluted. Still enjoyable to watch as a first time watch. - Reminiscence: Ambitious sci-fi movie which doesn't quite deliver on all its potential and has issues with its writing, but on the whole is a solid debut from Lisa Joy and the performances are really good. - The Abyss: Incredibly directed underwater sci-fi movie, which holds up really well today. - Infinite: Currently my least favourite movie of the year, and unfortunately by far the worst movie I've seen from Antoine Fuqua. Incredibly bland and forgettable despite its initially interesting premise. - The Sum of All Fears: Better than I expected, decent espionage thriller. - Cliffhanger: Also better than I expected, great stunts and action throughout. - Free Fire: Well directed and has some good performances but unfortunately rather forgettable and underwhelming upon reflection. Despite the attempts at being witty and smart, doesn't really have much to it.

Some first time viewings of September - Double Indemnity: Thrilling and well made noir. - The Protégé: Above average and B-grade action thriller with a weak script, elevated by the direction and the performances from Maggie Q, Samuel L. Jackson and Michael Keaton. - Kate: Very derivative action revenge thriller that's enjoyable and really works because of the action sequences and Mary Elizabeth Winstead's strong lead performance. - Malignant: An unapologetically insane and campy horror movie that was a blast to watch. - SAS: Red Notice: Overlong and forgettable action thriller, with a weak script, passable but generic action sequences, and mostly average performances. One of my least favourite movies of this year. - Notorious: Suspenseful and well made espionage film noir. - Miller's Crossing: Darkly comical and well executed crime drama from the Coen Brothers. - The Princess Diaries 1 and 2: The first movie is really enjoyable and entertaining, especially with the performances from Anne Hathaway and Julie Andrews. The second film isn't nearly as good and is even more ridiculous but I still had fun with it. - Small Axe: Alex Wheatle: Good biopic with a powerful story. - Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings: Refreshing entry into the MCU and one of their best movies. - Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai: Unique, original and well made crime/hitman movie, that's greatly directed. Forest Whitaker is fantastic in this.

I saw a lot in October
First of all a lot of horror movies: - In the Mouth of Madness: Great John Carpenter horror film, Sam Neill is really good in it. - Horror of Dracula (or Dracula 1958): Very enjoyable and classic horror movie. - The Wolf Man (1941): Bit dated and simplistic in part but I enjoyed it, the direction is particularly strong. - Ju-on: The Curse 1 and 2: The first movie is very low budget but it almost helps create a creepy atmosphere as a result, decent overall. Unfortunately 2 is not as good, and the first half an hour is just the last half an hour from the first movie. - Trick 'r Treat: Great anthology movie and one of the best movies to watch on Halloween. - Pulse: Phenomenal. Excellently directed, and effectively creepy and haunting. - House of Wax: Really enjoyable. - The Craft: Very fun, despite its datedness. However the second half and third act goes in a direction I wasnt a fan of, bringing down the overall film for me. - Raw: Unexpectedly amazing, I didn't know what to expect but it was very well made. - Possession: Very unique horror experience, so much to take in. Excellent from the writing, acting and direction. Probably my favourite horror movie I watched in October. - A Tale of Two Sisters: Completely unpredictable and wonderfully directed and put together. - House: Strong contender for the weirdest film I've ever seen. I'm not sure how I feel about it but I at least admire it for its uniqueness - Jennifer's Body: I can see why it's been getting a cult following recently, actually quite fun to watch. - Dead Ringers: Interesting and uniquely restrained David Cronenberg film which intrigued me and is helped by Jeremy Irons's dual performances, which is easily the best acting I've seen from him.
Other: - Miss Congeniality: Its okay but was funny enough and I liked Sandra Bullock and Michael Caine. - The Last Duel: One of Ridley Scott's best. A well crafted medieval drama with excellent performances, epecially from Jodie Comer. - No Time to Die: Top 3 Bond films, amazing.
Speaking of Bond, after No Time to Die I rewatched the entire franchise in backwards order. I enjoyed most of them and there's only around 5-6 I didn't like. There were two Bond films which I watched for the first time, From Russia with Love which I'd consider in the top 10 best Bond films, and Never Say Never Again (the unofficial Connery Bond film) which I surprisingly enjoyed, it was at least better than Diamonds are Forever.

Anyone seen House of Gucci? Enjoyed it!
Seriously, it's better movie than MC or RT score suggest.

Some more viewings from the past month: - The Green Knight: Absolutely stunning experience of a film. My favourite David Lowery film and one of the year's best. - Eternals: It's a bit messy and not all of it works but I appreciate how different it is from most of the other MCU films if nothing else. - The French Dispatch: Very well written and directed, and the massive cast are great. One of my favourite Wes Anderson movies. - The Power of the Dog: Slow burn neo-western that's incredibly well crafted. Performances are amazing too, particularly from Cumberbatch, Dunst and Smit-McPhee. - Last Night in Soho: The first half had me on board, but it goes downhill in the second half, becoming less interesting and failing at the horror attempts. It only gets worse as it enters its third act and ending. Great visuals and performances though. - Riders of Justice: One of the biggest surprises of the year. Both darkly hilarious and heartfelt, its well worth checking out. - The Lost Daughter: Great debut from Maggie Gyllenhaal, interesting character study, with some great performances from Olivia Colman, Jessie Buckley and Dakota Johnson. - Titane: One of the craziest films of the year and one of the most memorable, a great follow up to Raw and one of the highlights of 2021. - Candyman (2021): A little disappointing in its execution, particularly with its ideas. However a few performances and the great direction saves it. - Red Notice: Just about the most generic movie you'll see all year. - S.W.A.T.: Decent cop action thriller, but one where the plot only kicks in halfway through, it would've been much better with 30 minutes shaved off. - Venom: Let There Be Carnage: A notable improvement over the last film, self aware, leaning heavier into camp, and with solid direction from Andy Serkis. A lot of fun. - Pig: An emotional and sensitive character drama, with excellent performances from Nicolas Cage and Alex Wolff. - The Night House: A very surprising film from this year, especially for horror. One of the better recent horror films abour grief, it's directed incredibly, and Rebecca Hall gives a phenomenal performance. - Halloween Kills: Okay movie but disappointing follow up to 2018's Halloween, with some misguided writing and story choices.

Some of my viewings from December - Bleeder: Not one of Nicolas Winding Refn's better movies but still interesting and well directed. - Ransom: Decent hostage thriller. - Prisoners of the Ghostland: Very disappointing. Definitely stylish and weird but not over the top and weird enough. - Lamb: A wonderfully bizarre premise, well shot and with good performances, unfortunately disappointing execution. - Under Siege: Cheesy action thriller brought down by a bland Steven Seagul but elevated by scene chewing villains in Tommy Lee Jones and Gary Busey. - The Card Counter: Another great character study from Paul Schrader. - Lara Croft: Tomb Raider - The Cradle of Life: Has some fun moments, but worse than the first movie and somehow even more dated. - Hero (2002): Absolutely stunning to watch, great direction and marital arts sequences. - Ju-on: The Grudge: Has its issues but iconic horror movie nonetheless. - The Empty Man: Underrated recent horror movie that is well worth checking out. - The Interpreter: Decent political thriller. - The Matrix Resurrections: My favourite Matrix movie and possibly my favourite movie of 2021. - The 6th Day: Doesn't fully utilise the premise to its fullest potential, but still works as an entertaining and cheesy sci-fi action flick starring Arnold Schwarzenegger. - Highlander: Fantastically 80s sci-fi fantasy flick. - King Richard: Solid if conventional biopic, with some really good performances, especially from a career best Will Smith.
Not a movie but I also finished Twin Peaks (the first two seasons). Despite its filler period in the second season, I loved it, and its now one of my favourite shows of all time.
