yeah, i vaguely remember that she said she can't sing and Kate is much better in this (she was even singing the national anthem before some game), but why would she choose these 2 project in the first place, she must have read the scripts before she decided to join. so she lost her cool later? i wonder if we will ever find out what really happened I think she just decided to prioritize the fashion project... maybe she was a bit tired of acting and thought it would be more fun to try something else for a while.
I hope that this "for a while" won't last long ; 14 months seems like eternity already (and by the Hollywood standards it's more than a break). She is in her best years as an actress and that's wrong time to be "tired of acting".

i'm intrigued by her new thing, but i too hope it's not all she'll be focusing on, she's busy getting it off the ground now, it's understandable, market dates are set in 3 weeks so we're almost there and after that it should be a bit easier. i think so at least. i have no idea what her actual job is though, is she designing, promoting, coordinating the whole thing? how absorbing it will be in the future some marketing campaign with her, some fashion shows, or it will be on the down low? it would be devastating if she would put her acting career on hold for too long, like for a few years, she should be on the set shooting something by the end of this year, so it could be released in 2019. there would be a sense of continuity. but if she didn't pick something yet already, it will be rather hard to accomplish. so i hope she has something planned by now. i'm not overly optimistic though, in one of her latest interviews she's like "i don't know what i want, i don't know what i'm looking for"

I don't understand this "being in her best years" as an actress. Is it because she's young? It should be the opposite, you get better at acting with more experience. The roles she likes are actually likelier to be written for older rather than young women. She's certainly not interested in being cast in roles because she looks young and beautiful and can be a better girlfriend to the leading man (despite these last couple of little things she did). She's interested in complex, fully realised characters, and her chance of getting these parts will increase with time, not decrease. Look at the best middle aged actresses out there and the long careers they're having. Not to mention the grannies, there are plenty of actresses getting great parts past their 60s. We are heading past that time when actresses had a shelf life, fortunately, and if there's one person who couldn't be any happier about this is Rooney.

With "best years for actresses" I meant on 30s and 40s. She is 33 now; still young but with considerable experience. The next 10-15 years are exactly the time for best offers, best movies, best performances. Vox Lux looks exactly one of those projects with complex, fully realized characters. Annette maybe too. And she keeps dropping out of them without any proper replacement. A little more ambition and drive wouldn't hurt right now.
That's right but one of the problems is when she likes the story of some movie, wants to support it and then takes supporting or minor role without much substance in it (Trash, Lion, DWHWGFOF). Those type of roles are waste of time and beneath her talent. She should be focused on more meaningful characters to play (TGWTDT, Carol, Una, Vox Lux etc).
Of course; and I hope Rooney's acting career will last the next 50 years at least. But still, I'd rather not wait that long for Rooney to achieve some excellent success. Don't forget - Katharine Hepburn, Meryl Streep, Ingrid Bergman and others - all with long, successful career but they were getting the best, meaty roles and movies in their 30s and 40s. Maggie Smith and Judy Dench are among my favorite actresses but they won't get offer to play edgy characters such as Lisbeth, Una or Celeste in their 60s or 70s.

Popping in offer my opinion. I think it's much more out of Rooney's control than we think... We don't know what scripts/projects she has access to, and maybe the scripts she has been reading haven't been interesting or haven't featured fully developed characters for her to play. I think she is in a position where she is not working for the money (we know she and her family has tons of it) and she's obviously one of those celebrities not interested in fame (I doubt we'll ever see her in a big-budget franchise film ever again). She is more interested in working with arthouse directors and smaller films that have good stories.
Those projects are more limited than we think, and with such a giant crop of actresses to choose from that are around Rooney's age and even younger (think of someone like Mia Wasikowska who has traded roles with Rooney at least twice now) it can be difficult to secure projects. And because Rooney is not someone who is interested in fame or being on Jimmy Fallon every week, she is not considered "bankable" she doesn't want to play that game, which I admire and appreciate, but maybe in the industry, it hurts her chances at being in interesting films. Maybe that is why her agent pushed her to do Pan, but we all know that wasn't necessarily a fulfilling role for her even despite the whitewashing backlash.
Anyway, I don't think it should be a question of Rooney's ambition. She's allowed to take a break every now and then. I think she is very talented and obviously wants to work, but there is so little out there for her to choose from. She's not the type to just sign on to a project for the sake of working. Maybe that's what happened with Vox Lux and Annette. She was searching for something to do and these were the only interesting roles she could find at the time, then as time passed and production wasn't starting, she realized that she can't or doesn't want to sing on camera and dropped out.
I think Rooney knows herself and there must be a good reason as to why she dropped out of these two (seemingly cool) projects. Hopefully it means we'll get more in the future that are just as good, or even better.

it looks like she dropped out and that's why the movie got stuck in the first place? linkI wonder if she was insecure about the singing. I know she's said before that she doesn't like to do anything she's not one hundred percent confident she can do well, and both of these films she's dropped out of recently involved singing. I guess maybe her agent told her she "should do" those projects and then she realized she didn't "want to" do them. Those roles were more suitable for someone like Anna Kendrick anyway ;)

I completely agree with alexsays and as for Mortimer, if your period of interest spans 20 years and includes the 30s and 40s, well, it just began!! Rooney is 33 and still has 17 years to get the best roles. I wouldn’t fret to be honest.
I was actually quite relieved to learn she had been distracted by this fashion thing, it’s normal for complex and interesting humans to want to try different things instead of singlemindedly doing the same job for 40 years. She always said that life experience helps becoming better at acting. I was afraid it could just be personal issues, but I still think she has some personal stuff to deal with despite the rosey picture painted by mainstream media, and if she keeps ignoring roles after she’s solved these issues I will worry a lot more than I do now.

Apparently the shoot for this begins tomorrow.
Now that Rooney is no longer a part of this, what should we do with the thread, do we lock it?

from AW so, Rooney didn't have to be a perfect singer here, low-pressure situation for Portman, so i doubt Rooney threw it away because of stress and high expectation about her singing

first look
Female Terminator (T-1000 model) ?
It's a cool look, can't deny. But isn't Natalie perhaps...a bit old for this role ? What age is Celeste supposed to be ? Movie is set between 1999 and 2014 right ? So I suppose it covers her age from late teens to early 30s ? Natalie isn't that young anymore, her age is slowly starting to be noticeable.
