I love Jason Clarke and Joel Edgerton. But they're probably too old for it. My pick would be Ben Whishaw. I like Ben! Still I prefer an actor with a higher profile like Jake G or Matt D. Not because an indie actor can't do it but because it is a traditional project so it's an opportunity for work with a big industry name. I'd choose Fassbender :) Fassbender would be a very good choice. Is he up to anything right now? Free for fall?

April 2015: Lion. November 2016: Mary Magdalene .September 2017 House in the Sky. That's a sort of record of a director isn't? Garth went to debuting in cinema to trilogy in a blink. It will be interesting see him working with more artistic freedom. Megan Ellison should mean that. Wondering if he will bring G Fraiser in this? I love his work but maybe a different aesthetic would be better. Who will be Nigel? Casey Affleck and all is in the family...Just kidding. Is there a good looking Australian actor with the right profile? I love Jason Clarke and Joel Edgerton. But they're probably too old for it.
My pick would be Ben Whishaw.
A true Gatsby fan ;) Nigel Brennan was 36-37 at that time so yeah, Jason Clarke (48) is maybe a bit old but Joel Edgerton (43) would be good. I usually like him in everything.

Fassbender looks perfect for the part and his age is about right. : I'd like to see him working with Rooney again.
How much big is Brennan's part in the book ?

It's definitely a very important role. I think from what I can remember he's in it from the beginning till midway where... well... something happens. Not going to ruin it for you folks.

I like Fassbender. But, I will be thrilled if Alfie Allen gets the part.

I read House in the Sky and first I must say I was impressed how well written it is. Being a memoir I thought it would rely on the power of its experience neglecting other aspects of the story. But no. It is a pretty 3D story in terms of cultural context and what is more striking shows Amanda as a person with longings, flaws and contradictions. The aspect that interested me most was the idea of a person who goes out in search of some freedom finds another type of physical and mental closure. I hope the film understands Amanda in that contradictory sense naive and brave at the same time and that it is able to portray the background that made her believe that she did not have too much to lose when she came to know the world. It is not easy to portray this kind of current of consciousness and I hope the screenwriter is level and do not use voiceover. It is a story with enough capacity for self-criticism and nuances and it would be a shame to reduce it to a simple story of survival. I would really have liked Steve McQueen to direct this film as he is kind of an expert in psychological and moral closures. But I think Garth will do a beautiful and emotional film visually just I hope the script is smart and deep enough. Also I hope he works with a great DP like Rodrigo Prieto, Harris Savides or Bradford Young. The film needs transmit a sense of danger-darkness and hope quite particular and difficult to achieve. It is a sensory story in a way. I wish a great actress as Amanda mother (in Kidman in Lion way) It's a small role but emotionally relevant.. and I hope they don't use another actress for the young part of Amanda. Rooney is capable to do both. And it's important avoid comparisons with Lion... Thanks Red for the motivation :)

Thanks for sharing :) This was beautifully written.
Yeah, I also think Steve McQueen would be an ideal choice to direct this (with Fassbender playing Nigel Brennan part) but we need to have more trust in Garth. It feels like everyone is underestimating him for this project. We'll know more what to expect after Mary Magdalene and be optimistic as always.
Is Brennan interesting character in the book ?

Aw. Thank you. Yes. Nigel is very important, the connection with Amanda works on many levels and would have a few memorable scenes with Rooney. I don't know what the prospect will be about Nigel since he has his own book and as far as I know he's fighting with Amanda in real life. But in the book their relationship is full of nuances and a good actor would not reject the role. I guess Garth will want an Australian actor ...

The Negative:Because of the story and his personal approach to how he makes films, I fear he could make House campy (if not too much), maybe predictable too (which would be really bad for a film like this). To me that highly emotional and sensitive nature is both his strength and weakness. It shows in his work. The Positive:The guy is all heart, comes from a genuine place. He's wants people to feel the things he makes than trying to fake it to appeal a specific group of people. That is a big positive. This is what I think of when I get skeptical about him. And another positive is that, this time around he's working with Megan. After working with Harvey this is a big step up. I'm sure it'll show in the quality of the final product. But for that (Like you mentioned before) a lot would depend on how tight the screenplay is and how much creative control he's getting from Megan. If she gives complete creative control to everyone involved then this still has potential to be something special. Apologies if I sound too contradictory, I have mixed/positive feelings about this :)

But I also think Mary Magdalene will be key in understanding him as a director. A lot of the doubts come from some weakness of Lion and I read the script of Lion and it is quite basic and he improved it turning it into a visual story and sensitive story. We do not know what kind of director is with a big script in his hands. A House in the Sky should be a great script. They say Mary M's script is very good and I have a good feeling about MM. I think it will be special and maybe then we will be confident about his work at House adaptation

Just wondering, is the book violent or graphic in describing what happened to her? I get nervous reading stuff like that. Yep.

A kind of side effects of having read the book is to see with other eyes all those post of Amanda calling Rooney "my love" or "soulmate". I can tell you that someone with Amanda's experience is not going to establish a bond of trust with a person just because a contract signals it, so I think those posts are a testament to Rooney's ability to connect with people in a open, generous and unprejudiced way. Reading the book you can tell why Rooney felt that Amanda was a character that was born to interpret and I think it has to do not just with a love for Africa or travels but with a kind of intrinsic and deep nonconformity in the good sense of the word, to understand life as a search for something that you are not sure where it is or if it really exists. Something not material that is not related to being thankful or not of the opportunities that you have. I'm sorry if I sound strange or new age but the book really left me that impression. http://instagram.com/p/BJ9AOmjBsx-
